No, I have never tried sculpting, but I usually trim twice a year, once at the beginning of summer, once in the middle of fall.

i should trim about once a week but usually let it go to once every two weeks or so. if i let it go, the shrubbery takes over and covers up the the impressive fountain in the middle

Never.
I’m afraid that ornate topiaries will distract people from the flagpole.

Quite often, though it depends on what your climate is.
However, proper care is of the utmost importance.
Trimming and sculpting should be done by a Professional, with sharp instruments in a nice clean environment. The person should make sure they have completely clipped off whatever they are intending to clip befor pulling the cutting instrument away from the bush, otherwise it could result in the bush being pulled and yanked yard resulting in much pain to the poor bush. Also important is the after care, some people say that trees and bushes don’t feel but I disagree. Once the bush is trimmed, to reduce trauma it needs to be touched and brushed gently, whispered softly to then given a good thorough watering.

It depends on what type of bush. Rose bushes are trimmed every fall. Rhodies are trimmed only when they start getting too big. It all depends on what type of plant it is.
