Will working on my strength and lifting and stuff help cardiovascular endurance or muscular endurance?

I’m a high school cross country runner. I’ve been body sculpting, I guess, working on the muscle in my quads, buttocks, shoulders, abdominals, etc. Will this help me run for a longer time, or should I just focus on running?

Strength training does elevate the heart rate, but it mainly stresses muscles, resulting in firmness or growth (depending on the load and number of reps).

If you want to run longer, you need a workout that stresses the heart and lungs rather than the muscles. Running itself is ideal, but you could also use a Nordictrak, an elliptical trainer, or a stairclimber.

Well basically it doesn’t help you directly, because it only makes you stronger, doesn’t really effect your endurance at all. BUT by getting stronger you are less likely to get injuries from straining your muscles and when you get fatigued at the end of a race if your arms and core are strong you will hold together better. It probably does help your kick too.

These are only complimentary things though, if you want to get better at running you need to run. Lots of the Kenyans have never lifted weights a day in their life and look how well they do. So just lift as a complimentary sort of thing, not as something to take the place of running or whatever…our coach usually has us do calve raises, leg curls, leg extensions, pull ups, bench press, and and ab stuff…that’s pretty much all the running specific lifts you need to do, anything else is extra.
